I studied at the University of Worcester where I majored in Journalism and was awarded a BA(Hons) in January 2012.
My Independent Study Dissertation was based on a comparison of the media attention between the Olympics and the Paralympics.
The degree course allowed me to learn about the different areas of journalism from court cases to sports writing and has included modules on broadcast journalism.
As part of the course I and one of the other students have created a magazine called ‘Sports Bag’ (called as such as it contains everything you need to do sport). The magazine looks at all different types of sports from rugby and football to Olympic boxing and American football. In developing the magazine we interviewed players from different sports in Worcester who play key roles in their teams. I was lucky to be able to interview both Miles Benjamin the Worcester Warriors and England Saxons rugby player and Vikram Solanki the captain of the Worcestershire County Cricket Team. In these two interviews I asked the two players different questions that I thought would be relevant to the different interviews and which would be of interest to the readers. participants lived close to home. You can see copies of my interviews as well as other articles I have produced by clicking on the links to the top left of this page.
Before I went to University I had some experience in working in journalism when I had work experience with the Glamorgan GEM which is a local newspaper in South Wales. To get this
experience I won a competition for budding journalists by writing an article about myself and why I should be given this opportunity. I spent a week with the paper working with the Editor and other
staff doing various tasks such as entertainment, sport and more, getting the whole view and situation that a newspaper would be going through on the week that it is issued. At the end of the week I
was able to write my own article on a forthcoming school rugby tour to South Africa that I was going on which was published in the newspaper. A few weeks later I was again able to get another article
published on the trip to South Africa describing the experience.
I have worked alongside Readwave, which is an online blogging website which allows people to wrtte anything and everything that they would like to. I also carried out the role of Editor of a certain
theme which means that I was sent pieces that other bloggers had written and accept or decline their pieces. This allowed me to increase the knowledge of not just journalism but about working as an
Editor.
In 2014 I was given the opportunity to work within an active sports newsroom at Mid Glam Press Agency preparing copy of cricket, rugby and soccer matches which were to be used in various newpapers including Wales on Sunday.
Since leaving university I have attended a number of courses as part of my continuing personal development. These included a Sports Journalism Masterclass in Manchester and on two occasions (the second as one of the support team) the now popular Football Commentary Workshop in Derby. At these events I was tutored in the art of commentary (which complemented my training as part of my degree course) and then spent the afternoon session commentating on an organised soccer tournament. I will shortly be uploading these commentaries onto this website.
