Vikram Solanki - A Touch of Class
Last season was probably the worst season in the clubs history. They lost the majority of their games in the 1st Division and were relegated to Division 2 of the county championship. Despite all that, the former England International thinks the fans should not be worried.
One thing you can guarantee is that whatever side go out, we will give our absolute best. We have worked incredibly hard over the winter, whether it is in terms of fitness training or working on our technical skills.
Solanki who admitted that last season had been a tough season is now more optimistic about the season, especially as the squads younger players gained what he feels will be valuable experience last season.
Richard Jones, who went on England’s performance programme is one we’re really excited about. Ben Cox as a seventeen year old came into a championship game and responds the way he did making seventy odd runs was brilliant. Those guys now have an opportunity they wouldn’t have had otherwise which will give them a lot of experience. People like Flintoff, Trescothick and Vaughan. The opportunities they had when they were young made their careers. These young guys have got longer than they would have now to establish a career.
Despite the difficulties of last season, he remains loyal to the club who gave him his chance as a professional cricketer.
I’ve never considered leaving. I’ve really enjoyed my time at the club so far, playing with people like Hick and Tom Moody. I really benefited from playing with people like that in there young career. I view my role now as offering our youngsters as similar to that. There aren’t many better places around the world to play cricket than Worcester.
I have signed for four years and I’ve had one of those years. Three years is a long time in terms of where Worcester are at and where I am at. I would like to play for Worcester forever it would mean a great deal to me.
I’m genuinely excited about this season but I always am. We’ve got a good mix of youth that want to progress and learn and the more seasoned campaigners (like me) who can draw on that energy of the youngsters and their enthusiasm and help them channel that energy constructively.
